In Munch’s shoes – A visit in Ekeberg restaurant Oslo

Rav Salmon with pickles and wakame salad

Norway is a beautiful country indeed. Amazing nature, friendly people, beautiful girls. They all eat whale and baby seals, at least this was my assumption. After all I didn’t find any whale to taste, but went to a nice restaurant in the hills arount Oslo – the Ekeberg restaurant.

The restaurant is situated in a beautiful art-deco building, with an amazing view over the Oslo fjord. A great place to watch the sunset or the big cruise ships navigating through the bay. The place is also said to be the area, where the motif of Edvard Munch’s famous painting „The cry“ is situated.

The inside is nicely decorated, very modern and cubic, which is a nice antithesis to the round shapes outside. The personnel is very friendly (as it seems to me everywhere in Olso!). The menue offers an selection of rather international dishes, with a focus on (local ?) fish. The prices are for Norway quite reasonable. For drinks, we went for a non-alcoholic wine (because my wife was pregnant back then, and solidarity and stuff…you know). THIS WAS THE MOST DISGUSTING THING I EVER EVER EVER DRANK. EVER. Water then.

We had a table at the windows to the bay and all evening long we enjoyed a great view over Oslo. We took a 3 course menue:

Since Salmon is one of Norways best export goods, it was quite inevitable. This was – although from aquaculture – quite pleasant. Inevitable as it seems was also the disgusting wakame salad, which I HATE ! The pickled cucumber and the mango salad were excellent though, as was the lemon-mayonnaise.

Veal sous vide with potato and gravy

Another standard – sous vide prepared veal. The meat was very tender, juicy and tasty – very well prepared and a huge portion. It came with a weird potato cube (greetings from the Borg!), mash and gravy. A flawless main course!

Again the Borg! Seems to be an invasion on the plates 🙂 The grilled fillet was nice, tough a bit dry. But it tasted fresh and good. It came with a nicely prepared and seasoned mushrooms.

Parfait, ice cream, fruits

The dessert variation was a bit boring. The parfait (vanilla/coffee) was solid, but nothing more. The fruits and ice cream were, nothing special but a nice glass plate.

All in all it was a solid dinner in a beautiful location. You go there for the view, not for extraordinary special food. The mains were really good though, in size and quality. Altogether we paid 110€ for 2 persons, which is a really fair price for Norway.
